Sebastijan Zupancic
Lines and light - Collages and drawings - November 09 until December 07, 2019

"Collages and line drawings, their combinations and their numerous variations are elements that interest me.
By drawing I explore my own concentration and the relation between the texture of the paper and the drawing".

The first gallery solo exhibition is a very special moment in the professional career of every artist.

We are therefore especially looking forward to the first solo exhibition with collages and drawings by Sebastijan Zupancic.

After exploring the relationship between line or sign and the page space in the large format (200 x 150 cm), Zupancic has exclusively dealt with the small format in the last two years.

In 2018, Zupancic produced the first A4-sized line drawings and collages, in which he used pencil and scalpel as equivalent means of design on brown-toned paper, some of which had several layers. Depending on the incidence of light, cuts in the paper appear as lines as well as those he draws with a pencil. We show, among other works, a four-part group from this period with various combinations of horizontal and radiating lines and cuts.

Zupancic cuts large white A4 papers into thin stripes and glues them as fine geometric reliefs onto white papers. He then covers the resulting collages with fine ink lines. He creates series of sheets in which he either sets the lines at right angles to the collaged stripes or draws them along their ridges.

In 2019 he begins a group of A3 large collages made of hard white paper, which he covers with the finest grids of pencil lines. They form the twelve drawings that he presented this summer as part of his diploma examination at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig and that we are presenting to a broad public for the first time in Cologne.

Sebastijan Zupancic was born in 1993 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He discovered his passion for drawing early on. After his first studies in Slovenia, he took part in study semesters in the Netherlands and Austria as part of an Erasmus scholarship 2015-2016. In 2016 he begins his studies at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig in the classes of Ingo Meller and Michael Riedel. In the summer of this year he received his diploma with distinction and was accepted into Michael Riedel's master class.

We congratulate Sebastijan Zupancic on the Saxon State Scholarship 2019-2020.

A catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition.
